Consensus Mechanism
How a network agrees on one version of history.
A consensus mechanism is the set of rules that lets a decentralized network agree on which transactions are valid without a central authority. The two dominant kinds are proof of work and proof of stake.
Proof of work, which underlies mining, secures the chain by requiring real computation, so the network trusts the history with the most work behind it.
