Sharding
Splitting a chain into parallel pieces to scale it.
Sharding divides a blockchain into several pieces that process transactions in parallel, so throughput can rise without every node having to handle everything.
The hard part is not the split but the communication between shards, and the security of each shard once the validators are divided too. It is a scaling approach found mostly outside classic proof-of-work chains.
